Colonel Gaddafi's former prime minister, Al Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi has gone on trial in Libya charged with ordering mass rape during the uprising last year. Mahmoudi, who was Gaddafi's Prime Minister from 2006 until he was killed during last year's Libyan civil war is facing charges of corruption and accusations that he ordered mass rape in the cities of Zuara and Misrata. If found guilty he could face life in prison or execution. Libya's new leaders want to try former Gaddafi loyalists to mark Libya's transformation since the dictator's overthrow. However, human rights groups are worried that the legal system may not meet international standards, and Mahmoudi's lawyers say his extradition from Tunisia to go on trial in Libya was illegal.
