Jim Byers' new book, An American Odyssey, is based on a short story that his grandfather, Donald Byers, wrote about his stateside basic training several years after his discharge from the United States Army. Those handwritten and typed accounts constitute the early chapters, while the latter portion of the book is derived from notes he scribbled into pocket-sized pads while in combat in World War II. Letters that he wrote to family and friends filled in pieces of missing time and also reveal his personable side. The book is being published nearly sixty years after Donald Byers' death.
