To all JAF shipmates of all years:
An ad hoc reunion committee consisting of Captain Stark, Gerry (Chopper) Chopp, Chris Martel and myself have been looking into a planned 2nd reunion in 2009 for the crews of the U.S.S. Julius A. Furer (DEG/FFG-6).
Fully realizing that we could not possibly match the splendid planning and execution of the first reunion, we started discussing what we could do that did not require the logistics of the original reunion.
An idea was presented and ? finally ? after much discussion, was agreed to by the committee. A reunion at sea!
Why a cruise? Mostly because once you've paid the cruise fare, it's almost all inclusive. Your hotel is paid, your food is paid, your entertainment is paid. Drinks and shore excursions are extra. We know that the economy is tough right now which is another reason for choosing the cruise for a reunion site. When you see the price below, you'll have to agree that the price is reasonable. And of course, spending time with shipmates is priceless!
For those of you who have cruised before, you'll know of what I speak when I say that being at sea with smiling faces waiting on you hand and foot, comfortable beds, good chow AND NO WATCHES TO STAND is the only way to go.
What we have chosen is a 5-day cruise out of Miami onboard the Carnival ship Destiny. The cruise departs Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 and returns to Miami on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. There will be port calls in Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios. To check out the cruise and the many things that are offered, go to http://www.carnival.com/Itinerary.aspx?embkCode=MIA&itinCode=WC1&durDays=5&shipCode=DE&subRegionCode=CW&rateCode=B&sailDate=11/2/2009. There you can check out the staterooms, shore excursions and onboard activities.
You will find options as to your cabins. The inside cabins (just a room, no windows) are the cheapest, with the prices going up from there. You are free to choose the accommodations which best meet your needs and budget.
There will be a formal night on the second night out. It's suits, tuxedos or military uniforms for men, coordinated pantsuits, cocktail dresses, evening gowns or military uniforms for women. Don't let that put you off, if you don't care to dress up for dinner, there are other restaurants on the ship for more casual dining or, you can get room service 24-7.
Also, PASSPORTS ARE REQUIRED.
You'll notice that I've sent this email to as many shipmates as I have email addresses for. PLEASE, LOOK AT THE ADDRESS LIST. If you know of anyone who did not get a copy. Forward it along. If you have any doubts as to whether or not a shipmate ? from any year ? got this, PLEASE FORWARD! Also, if you know of anyone without email (STCS Linville comes to mind), print this and send it out via regular mail to them.
Oh, yes, if you got this twice, forgive me. I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy, I like to make sure that everyone gets this. Chris Martel will also be sending this out ensuring the widest possible net is being thrown.
We will be working through and with Robbie Robinson, a retired USN/USCG chief who specializes in reunion cruises. He has answers to all of your questions. I'm sure he can arrange air/cruise packages as well as round-trip transfers to/from the airport. At the end of this email is some information he has already provided and other details.
He has cautioned us as to the high prices of hotels in the Miami area, so if at all possible, you may wish to fly in on the day of departure and out the day of return.
He has told me that he can arrange a space for us to meet as a group at least once and that our dining tables would be assigned in close proximity to one another so we can share meals as a group.
The four committee members have made the commitment and set aside the time to attend. I have, in fact, already sent in my down payment. We hope that as many as possible will join us. Captain Stark has expressed the hope to see a minimum of 42 couples to match the 42nd anniversary of the ship's commissioning. Personally, I hope for more.
We'd like to see all who attended the first reunion, plus of course, those who couldn't make it that time. You have almost a year to plan and save. Please give all serious thought to attending.
